What is Abakus?

Abakus is the subject organisation of the special education students in the University of Jyväskylä. Abakus takes care of the special education students’ rights. We work with our faculty, department of education and special education subject department to improve our studies and students’ status.

Abakus organizes all kinds of fun and educational events and we work and arrange events together with many other subject organisations. Abakus shares two subject organisation spaces with other educational subject organisations, which are Ruusula and Kasvisto. Ruusula is located in Ruusupuisto and Kasvisto is located in the cellar of Opinkivi-building. In student organization spaces you can meet other students and relax. Joining Abakus is a great way to make friends!

Why should you join Abakus and how?

By becoming a member of Abakus you can participate in our events and gain several member benefits. For example, the right to join SOOL (the organisation of all teacher students in Finland), discounts and of course the right to buy our amazing green overalls!

Member fee is 25€ for special education major of University of Jyväskylä and 10€ for minor/secondary subject students, separate masters degree students and exchange students. The fee covers the whole studying time.

If you want to become a member you can pay the fee to Abakus´ bank account FI52 4762 0010 0629 66 (POP Pankki). Write along a message “member fee, given names, family name, domicile (city of recidence)”. For example “Member fee Kerttu Kroko Jyväskylä”.

Events and where to find them?

Abakus organises different events such as Sitsit (a super fun academic table party with singing and optional drinking) sport events and boardgame or karaoke nights. Often the events are in finnish but we encourage our international members to also join and mingle with others.
